BACKGROUND OF KAKO SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL
Kako Senior Secondary School was founded as a Secondary School in 1963 by the Christiansof West Buganda Diocese. They took advantage of the property that had previously belonged to the defunct Kiwaala Hotel. When the owners of this hotel left, the property was repossessedby the landlord, the late Timoseewo Kiswa, a prominent Christian. A group of Christians [Anglicans] negotiated with the late Kiswa and bought both the property and land from him. They [the Christians] chose one of them, the late Mesuseera Kayongo who was a retired Principal of Namutamba Primary Teachers’ College to take charge of starting the school. They did the necessary modifications on the former hotel and in January 1963, the pioneerstudents were enrolled in Kako Senior Secondary School.
The parents who were charged with the task of mobilizing resources and establishing Kako S.S were Mesers Mesuseera Musoke, Zefania Kiganda, Yusuf Kyeyune, William Lugobe, Yokana Mukasa, Rev. Canon Erisa Wamala, Tito Sserumaga, Amos Ssenfuma, Bulasio Jjunju, Stanely Kiiza, Ssalongo Erenesti Kaggwa, Yokanna Lukanga, Asanasio Kamya, YokanaBalironda and Ssalongo Kitaali, among others. Mesuseera Kayongo had been in the vanguardof mobilizing the funds and acquiring land form Timoseewo Kiswa, his confidant.
A year later, these Christians felt they had a duty of handing over the school to the Diocese of West Buganda since it had got off the ground. They handed over the budding school to Rev. Canon Benon Lwanga who stood in for the Bishop [following the departure of Bishop Festo Lutaaya]. The school thus became a Church of Uganda School.
In 1965, Kako S.S.S became Government-Aided. The Government of the day supported the school by building six modern staffhouses; a modern science laboratory block and two moreclassrooms in addition to posting teachers of Ugandan, Asian and English origins.
The school benefitted a lot from the First IDA project which saw the school’s infrastructuregrowing. The old structures at Kiwaala [Hotel] were abandoned as the new buildings were putto use.
In 1979, the Parents Teachers’ Association (PTA) was formed with the aim of, among other things, improving the welfare of both the staff and students. It also sought to keep the schoolcompetitive and develop, with the support of the Government, and the Church.
In 1980, Kako S.S.S became an A’ level School and the pioneer students sat for their A’level exams in 1982. They performed well and the school went ahead to do well academically and in other virtuous activities at all levels, including boxing. It became a competitive schoolat national level, producing many Ugandans who are now well-placed in all sectors of this country- religion, politics, engineering, medicine, the judiciary, education and journalism among other fields. The trend remained positive till internal squabbles, liberation wars and wanton changes took their toll on the school.
Another influential association is Kako Old Students Association (KOSA) which has very keeninterest in the school.
